Allen C. B. Horsley

In 2007 Allen retired as the senior litigation partner in the Boston Office of LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & McCrae, LLP, then one of the largest multinational law firms, to live in Stowe and teach Commercial Arbitration, UCC Article II and Commercial Transactions as an adjunct professor at the Vermont Law School. In 2008, Allen became a member of the Vermont Bar and since 2009 has returned to the full-time practice of law. Since 2009 Allen has concentrated on the representation of Vermont and Massachusetts based clients in the resolution of commercial and personal disputes. Those disputes typically included breaches of contract, business and corporate governance issues, personal injury, family law matters, real estate claims (including boundary disputes), unfair trade practices, employment, partnership disagreements and fiduciary and probate related claims.

After graduating from Harvard, cum laude, in 1963, Allen received his LLB from the University of Virginia in 1966, becoming a member of the Massachusetts Bar that year. From 1967 until January of 1971 Allen served as a Captain in the Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps. Following a tour as the staff Judge Advocate for the 196th Light Infantry Brigade stationed in Chu Lai, Viet Nam (1967-68), Allen was stationed in the Pentagon as Assistant and as Acting Chief of the Legislative Relief Division, JAGC Army (1968-1971), presenting to committees and sub-committees of the House and Senate the Army’s position on private House and Senate bills impacting the Army or the Department of Defense.

In 1971, Allen obtained an LLM (Economic Regulation) from the George Washington University National Law Center, and in that year, returned to private practice in Boston as an associate, specializing in anti-trust and general litigation, with the firm of Goodwin, Procter and Hoar, now Goodwin Procter, one of New England’s most successful firms.

In October 1974 Allen established his own litigation practice in Boston, and in 1981 merged that practice with a mid-sized New England regional firm, Widett, Slater & Goldman, until 1992 when he was invited to join LeBoeuf.

As the senior litigation partner in LeBoeuf’s Boston Office Allen led teams of highly talented lawyers representing national, international, local and New England regional corporate and individual clients in a wide variety of litigation and arbitration matters. These included complex contractual, corporate and partnership disputes and cases involving securities, real estate, intellectual property, business torts, regulatory and administrative compliance, Massachusetts state and federal 1st Amendment constitutional rights, fiduciary obligations, probate administration and complex family law matters.

Allen’s more than 45 years of experience in the successful representation of large and smaller businesses and individuals throughout New England, and, indeed much of the country, continues to serve his Massachusetts and Vermont clients well, bringing unusual insight and knowledge to problems arising in the litigation and arbitration of their disputes.

In 1997 Allen and his wife, Heide, a Harvard trained pediatrician, built a primary home in Stowe. After ten years of commuting to Boston, New York and elsewhere, since 2007 Allen has lived and worked full-time in Stowe, while continuing to represent clients in Massachusetts.

In addition to the Vermont state courts, Allen is admitted to practice before the United States District Court of Vermont, the state and federal Courts of Massachusetts, the United States Courts of Appeal for the 1st and 2nd Circuits, the United States District Courts for the Southern District of New York and the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces (formerly the United States Court of Military Appeals).

During his career, Allen has published numerous articles and has served as faculty or chair of many CLE panels on subjects ranging from anti-trust to business valuation in litigation and many aspects of trial practice (including evidence, cross examination of experts, and State and Federal Rules of Procedure in state and federal courts).

Allen has been recognized as a “Super Lawyer” in Vermont and Boston for business and securities litigation, is a member of the Vermont Bar Association and serves on the Board of Directors of the Lamoille Economic Development Corporation.
